SIROLIMUS (RAPAMYCIN)

Description

Sirolimus, also known as rapamycin, is a medication used primarily as an immunosuppressant to prevent organ rejection following transplantation. It belongs to a class of drugs called mTOR inhibitors, which inhibit the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), a protein kinase involved in cell growth, proliferation, and survival.

In transplantation medicine, sirolimus is often used in combination with other immunosuppressive drugs, such as calcineurin inhibitors (e.g., tacrolimus, cyclosporine) and corticosteroids, to prevent rejection of transplanted organs (e.g., kidney, liver, heart). Sirolimus works by inhibiting the activation and proliferation of T cells, a type of white blood cell involved in the immune response. By suppressing the immune system, sirolimus helps prevent the body from attacking and rejecting the transplanted organ.

In addition to its immunosuppressive properties, sirolimus has also been investigated for its potential therapeutic effects in other conditions, including certain types of cancer, particularly renal cell carcinoma, and certain autoimmune disorders. Research continues into the various potential applications of sirolimus beyond its original use as an immunosuppressant.
