A phospholipid antibodies panel measures the levels of specific antibodies directed against phospholipids in the blood. Phospholipids are a type of lipid molecule that are major components of cell membranes. In some individuals, the immune system can produce antibodies that target phospholipids, leading to autoimmune disorders such as antiphospholipid syndrome (APS).

APS is characterized by the presence of phospholipid antibodies, including anticardiolipin antibodies (IgG and IgM), lupus anticoagulant, and anti-β2-glycoprotein I antibodies. These antibodies can increase the risk of blood clots forming in arteries and veins, leading to conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke, and recurrent pregnancy loss.

The phospholipid antibodies panel typically includes tests for both IgG and IgM antibodies to provide a comprehensive assessment of the immune response to phospholipids. Elevated levels of these antibodies, particularly if detected on multiple occasions, may indicate an increased risk of thrombotic events and other complications associated with APS. However, it’s essential to interpret the results in the context of the patient’s clinical presentation and medical history, as other factors can also contribute to the development of thrombotic disorders.
