Description
HE4, or Human Epididymis Protein 4, is a protein that is produced in various tissues throughout the body, including the male reproductive system (epididymis) and certain female reproductive tissues (e.g., fallopian tubes, endometrium). HE4 has gained attention primarily in the context of ovarian cancer.
In clinical practice, HE4 is often measured alongside CA-125 (cancer antigen 125), another protein marker, as part of diagnostic testing for ovarian cancer. Elevated levels of HE4 and CA-125 may indicate the presence of ovarian cancer or other gynecological conditions. HE4 is particularly useful in certain cases where CA-125 levels may be elevated due to non-cancerous conditions such as endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease.
While HE4 testing can provide valuable information, it is not used as a standalone diagnostic tool for ovarian cancer. Rather, it is typically used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests, imaging studies, and clinical evaluation to help assess the likelihood of ovarian cancer and guide treatment decisions.
It’s essential to interpret HE4 test results in the context of a patient’s overall clinical presentation and medical history. Elevated HE4 levels may indicate the need for further evaluation by a healthcare provider, which may include additional imaging studies, biopsies, or referral to a specialist for further assessment and management.
