Description
Rheumatoid factor (RF) is an autoantibody that can target various components of the body’s own tissues, particularly IgM antibodies directed against the Fc portion of IgG antibodies. It’s commonly associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) but can also be found in other autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, as well as in a small percentage of healthy individuals.
The Rheumatoid Factor IgA test specifically measures the levels of IgA antibodies against the Fc portion of IgG antibodies. While IgM RF is more commonly tested for in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, IgA RF can also be useful, especially in cases where IgM RF may not be present.
Elevated levels of Rheumatoid Factor, whether IgA, IgM, or IgG, can indicate an autoimmune or inflammatory condition, but it’s important to interpret the results in the context of a patient’s clinical symptoms and other diagnostic tests. Elevated RF levels alone are not sufficient for a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis or any other autoimmune disorder.
