Description
Fecal calprotectin is a protein found in the stool that can be used as a marker for intestinal inflammation. It’s primarily associated with conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. When there’s inflammation in the intestines, white blood cells release calprotectin into the stool. Testing for fecal calprotectin levels can help doctors diagnose and monitor inflammatory bowel conditions, as well as differentiate between IBD and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which doesn’t involve inflammation.
