Description
Aldolase is an enzyme found in cells throughout the body, particularly in muscle tissue. Its primary function is to catalyze the reversible conversion of fructose-1,6-bisphosphate to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate during glycolysis, which is the breakdown of glucose to produce energy.
Clinically, aldolase levels in the blood can be measured to assess muscle damage or injury, as elevated levels are often associated with conditions such as muscle trauma, muscular dystrophy, myositis (inflammation of muscles), and other muscle diseases. Aldolase levels are one of several markers used in diagnosing and monitoring these conditions, along with other tests such as creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH).
